Consciousness is primary. Everything else is an invention of consciousness. The physical world doesn’t really exist the way we ordinarily think it does. Human beings are not unitary organisms, either; it just appears that we are from a less aware, or immature, state. Not only are we not unitary, our collective social dynamics appears to be fractal in nature… just like the structure of all the other natural things that surround us (plants, sea shells, etc.). The reason the universe and the physical world exist, is for the same reason that there are electromechanical pinball machines in the world. They are there for entertainment and creativity. There is something pleasant about bells and whistles and flashing lights. There is no explanation for consciousness. It will forever remain the number one Mystery.
