We are born into a kind of Shangri-La here on Earth, which is the positive part of the qualia farm, and in the afterlife we are exposed to the negative part. Human beings are tortured to the point that their memories disappear, and that's one of the reasons why you don't have any knowledge of the world beyond this one.

There are half a million live human births per day on Earth, and half a million human deaths per day... but we don't die.

In the future, they create sentient automated systems, by using the qualia energy output from a sub-species (ie: humans), to perform specific and trainable tasks. In fact, entire vast networks of such systems exist. I've seen it.
